Licensing, basic “how-to” training and estimating software training are needed.
The first step is getting licensed. We always recommend getting an Adjuster’s license in your state of residence if your state requires an Adjuster’s license. However, many Adjusters who work nationally doing CAT work hold a Texas or Florida Adjuster’s license, because these two licenses have broad
reciprocity with other states and are two of the most active states for weather-related catastrophes. InsuranceTrainingU offers both the TX and the FL class live and online click here.
Most people bring valuable skills with them, but Adjusters just coming into the industry must spend some time learning the essentials. Basics like how to read a policy, how to scope a roof, what equipment to have, and how to get on the rosters of the companies that hire Adjusters are all necessary skills. If you have a good friend who is an Adjuster, it is a great idea to pick his or her brain for this info. If they will let you spend some time doing “ride-alongs” with them, that’s even better. Make sure they show you how to process a claim from start to finish! Completing the paperwork is the part that snags new adjusters. InsuranceTrainingU has a Practical Adjusting class that goes over all these basics, including how to get work in the field. In this class, we’ll share a ton of knowledge we’ve learned that helped us to be successful in the industry.
In days gone by, Adjusters used to write claims by hand – on paper, in the field. Nowadays, everything is “paperless” and claims are written with estimating software programs. There are several programs out there – Xactimate, IntegraClaim (MSB), PowerClaim and Simsol to name a few. However, not all estimating software is created equal. As it stands, many companies require that an Adjuster use particular software. For example, Allstate requires IntegraClaim, and State Farm requires Xactimate. By a large margin, however, companies requiring specific software usually require Xactimate - Xactimate has the largest share of the claims software business. For this reason, unless you already have a job lined up that requires something else, we recommend that a new Adjuster learn how to use Xactimate – it will be by far the most marketable software knowledge for getting a job.
When you learn Xactimate, make sure that you don’t just learn how to use the software. What we mean is that we get folks through our Xactimate classes who’ve taken a bunch of Xactimate training but still can’t write a claim with it. InsuranceTraininU, through our All-Lines Training division, was the first company to offer Adjuster-specific Xactimate training. You’ll learn exactly how to properly write a claim, in just the format the insurance companies require. Struggling with Xactimate on your first deployment is hellish. We’ll make sure you’re ready to go in this department.
Once you have secured your license, learned the basics and have a good foundation in an estimating software, it’s time to get work. There are literally hundreds of companies that hire Catastrophe Adjusters. Some CAT Adjusters work directly for the insurance company. For example, State Farm has their own CAT team. State Farm also hires independent CAT adjusters through independent claims companies. Most CAT adjusters work as independent contractors through these claims companies. To get work as a CAT adjuster it is important to get on the “rosters” of these companies. We’ve compiled a list of the majority of the claims companies at this link click here for your convenience. Although we recommend attending our Practical Adjusting class for a complete discussion on resume building and employment strategy, we have outlined some basics on this page click here.
