Hurricane Claims:
Hurricanes have been active, and there’s no indication that the activity will slow down. The Atlantic is warm and the experts say that conditions point to high hurricane activity for some time to come, and that means hurricane claims and lots of work for hurricane adjusters.
Hurricane claims are - although exciting – not necessarily the “meat and potatoes” of catastrophe adjusting. True, they are the most high profile; lots of news and coverage. But there are many other catastrophes that happen more regularly than hurricanes. For instance, during the course of a normal year, there are many more hail claims than hurricane claims. Same goes for flood – most years have a significant number of flood claims, but hurricane claims only come around every few years. Hurricane claim jobs are, however, unique, exciting and challenging. The large dollar losses after a major hurricane make for a good fee bill too, making hurricane claims uniquely profitable for hurricane adjusters. A well rounded catastrophe adjuster should be ready to handle all of these disasters and more.
The first step to becoming a hurricane adjuster – your adjuster license
So you’re interested in becoming a hurricane insurance claims adjuster? Good idea! It’s a fantastic job, and life as an hurricane insurance adjuster is unique and quite excellent. Obtaining your hurricane insurance adjusters license is the first step to a lucrative career as an insurance adjuster, and at adjustertraining.com’s adjuster school we’ve made it easy to secure two of the most valuable insurance adjuster licenses in the industry.
Adjuster Training’s school proudly offers two essential hurricane adjuster licenses; the FL insurance adjusters license and the Texas insurance adjusters license. These two insurance claims adjuster licenses are reciprocal with a massive number of other states, and both have frequent hail, hurricane and flood damage. Moreover, having an insurance claims adjusters license from Texas or FL is perfect if your state of residence does not have an adjuster license or if you wish to work catastrophe claims throughout the entire nation.
Texas or FL insurance adjusters license – which is best for you?
Getting your adjusters claims license in your state of residence is always a good idea. However, many states do not issue an insurance adjuster license, others have very difficult application/examination requirements, and some state do not reciprocate with other states. So:
a) If you are a resident of Texas, you need a Texas insurance adjusters license
b) If you are a resident of FL, you need a FL insurance adjusters license
c) if you reside in a state without an insurance adjuster license requirement, we recommend obtaining your Texas insurance adjuster license, because the Texas insurance adjuster license is reciprocal with 32 other states
d) b) if you reside in a state that does have residency, but does not have broad reciprocity, we recommend securing a Texas insurance adjuster license or a FL insurance adjuster license for the following reason. Both FL and Texas are very active weather states, they are reciprocal with each other and with most other states in the union.
e) If you are from another country, we strongly recommend securing a Texas insurance adjuster license.
The benefits of a Texas insurance adjuster license (FL license info is below):
The Texas insurance adjuster license is one of the most important, sought-after licenses in the industry for handling claims on a national basis. Because there is no such thing as a “national insurance adjuster license” or a “catastrophe insurance adjuster license”, most hurricane adjusters hold this license. Because it is reciprocal with over 32 other states, a Texas insurance adjuster license holder will often be deployed to another state under an “emergency/temporary” insurance adjusters license, but can apply for and receive their permanent insurance adjuster license in that state because most states are reciprocal with the TX insurance adjuster license. Moreover, the Texas insurance adjuster license is easy to obtain. Adjustertraining.com offers this license both online and in a short 3-day course, both with a guaranteed pass. The Texas license is as close as you can get to a national hurricane adjuster license.
The benefits of a FL insurance adjuster license:
Florida is one of the most active states in the country, and is most certainly the most frequently hit by hurricanes. Because of this, we recommend obtaining your FL insurance adjuster license and keeping it active so you can be on the short-list for deployment for hurricane claims. The FL insurance adjuster license is reciprocal with 16 other states. The FL insurance adjuster license has traditionally been considered difficult to obtain, but adjustertraining.com has changed all that. We now offer a class that will completely waive the otherwise required state exam. The state exam is notoriously difficult, and has a low first-time pass rate. Our CA designation class will get you the FL insurance adjuster license without all the hassle; online or live!

Insurance adjuster jobs – how do I get from “here” to “hired”?
An insurance adjuster job is one of the most rewarding jobs out there; it has everything. It pays very well, the industry does not fluctuate with the whims of the economy like other industries, it allows a good deal of flexibility, requires office time as well as field time, and you get to help people every day of your career. Let’s look at an adjuster job a bit closer below:
What are the different types of claims adjuster jobs?
There are a number of ways to get into claims jobs; working directly for an insurance company as a “staff adjuster”, working as an “IA” (independent adjuster) doing daily claims, or getting a claims job as a catastrophe adjuster (CAT adjuster). All have their advantages and disadvantages.
· Staff adjuster job: Starting out your insurance adjuster career as a staff adjuster is one of the easiest ways into the industry. Insurance companies are always looking for licensed, qualified individuals to work claims. A company position will be very secure; company laptop, company car, benefits, salary, vacation, the works. Moreover, you’ll get a first-hand understanding of how the claims business works from the inside. On the other hand, a claims job as a staff adjuster is generally not as lucrative as an adjuster job as a independent adjuster.
· Independent adjuster job: Independent claims adjusters jobs are quite profitable. Whether you are working catastrophes or daily claims, pay is good and in direct proportion to the amount of effort you put into your work. It is not uncommon to make an average of $300 to $400 per claim, and many can complete several in a day (we’ve even met adjusters who can complete 10-15 claims in a day!). Of course this takes some time to ramp-up to, but even in the beginning when you are doing a few claims per day the money is quite good. On the other hand, you will usually need to pay for ALL of your expenses out-of-pocket. This includes lodging, food, vehicle, computer, equipment, gas, insurance – everything. This means that, to be successful at a claims job, you may need some reserves until you’re paid on your claims. Moreover, independent adjuster jobs can be less stable than staff adjuster jobs, since they often depend on the weather.
· Catastrophe adjuster job: Most “CAT” adjusters (or hurricane adjusters) are independent adjusters working catastrophes instead of local “daily” claims. CAT claims jobs are extremely enjoyable for the right kind of person. Working catastrophe claims you get to travel, and if you enjoy the excitement of being in a disaster area you get to travel to great places! The pay is some of the best in the business and you are truly helping people in need. Hurricane adjusters need to be prepared to “wing it”. Often, after a hurricane, there’s no water, electricity or housing. Be ready to improvise in order to make it in a hurricane.
· Auto claims: This is technically not another “kind” of claims job, because auto claims jobs are filled by adjusters with the very same license as a property adjuster. Most folks who come into the business are interested in handling property claims, but auto claims are another big part of the business. Every time there is a catastrophe, there are auto claims and therefore auto adjuster jobs. Additionally, folks who prefer to work daily claims will find no shortage of damaged autos needing to be adjusted locally. Auto claims jobs are reputed to pay slightly less than property claims, but some auto claims adjusters develop a system that allows them to adjuster a great number of auto claims in a day, thereby making it very lucrative.
